Russia: At least 13 dead after gold mine collapse
At least 13 people were killed after a barricade pulled into a gold mine in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia on Saturday morning, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced.
"We are currently informed of 13 deaths," the ministry said. More than ten people are reported as missing.
Several people were injured and at least 14 miners were taken to hospital, three of whom were seriously injured, investigators said, who are already conducting a criminal investigation in violation of safety rules.
According to preliminary data, the dam collapsed near a gold mine on the Seiba River, south of the city of Krasnoyarsk. The great rush of water flooded the temporary dormitories where the miners rested. "We do not yet know how many people were inside, perhaps some of them left the buildings when this happened," the Russian Emergency Ministry said.
Heavy rainfall had eroded the dam, and the water had flooded and drained several temporary shelters housing mine workers, a local official told Interfax.
Russian television network Rossiya 24 showed images of damaged facilities, flooded, full of water and mud.
District Governor Alexander Us told television that nearly 80 people were staying at these temporary facilities south of the city of Krasnoyarsk.
According to the ministry, more than 270 people are involved in search and rescue operations.
