Why newspapers in Australia have been blacklisted
Australian newspapers have today circulated with black censorship all their front-page articles in a protest against legislation restricting press freedom.
The protest involved both national circulation newspapers, including The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian Financial Review, as well as regional newspapers.

Protest against restriction of press freedom

The Australia's Right to Know coalition campaign comes after police raided the ABC television headquarters in Sydney and the home of a News Corp reporter in June, whose legitimacy is being investigated. higher court, after the disclosure of information that put the government in difficulty.
In addition, all Australian television networks have aired ads urging viewers to think: "When your government is hiding the truth, what is it that is hiding you?"
"Journalism is a cornerstone of our democracy," said Paul Murphy, head of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA).
"It is there to control the powerful, to shed light on illegal acts and to put governments in charge, but they keep the Australian public in the dark," he said in a statement.
The Australian Parliament has long been adopting bills to protect national security, it claims, but which limit the right of citizens to know exactly what the government is doing on their behalf, the MEAA emphasizes.
Today's protest aims to put pressure on the country's government to - among other things - exclude journalists from legislation restricting access to sensitive information, protect more public interest witnesses and reform defamation legislation, which are among the most rigorous and complex in the world.
Unlike most democracies in the world, Australia does not have a specific declaration on the rights of journalists, nor does it provide for the protection of freedom of expression in its Constitution.

Protecting national security without the public's knowledge

"Police operations at the home of journalist Anika Schmecherst of News Corp and the ABC offices in Sydney are an attack on press freedom in Australia, but this is only the tip of the iceberg," Murphy said.
These police operations in May, following the re-election of the conservative liberal government of Scott Morrison, during which police searched some 9,000 files on ABC journalist computers and searched inside the Schmidthertz lingerie drawer.
The ABC had then pointed out that the police investigation was linked to articles published in 2017 on war crimes charges allegedly committed by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan.
According to News Corp, the investigation against Schmidthercht involved an article on the Australian government's plans to monitor citizens' emails, mobile messages and bank accounts.
Global attention to freedom of the press turned to Australia again earlier this year when a court asked reporters not to report that the former Vatican treasurer, Cardinal George Pell, had been found guilty of sexual abuse.
Some Australian media outlets reported that a person was convicted without naming him, but other media belonging to foreign groups mentioned Pell's name because they did not belong to the court.
